Whatever Happened to "Because I Said So"

I can tell you from personal experience that saying "Because I said so" works more often than people might think. When I was questioned further, I'd respond, "Because I'm the Mom. When you grow up, then you can be mean too."

I found myself defining roles time and time again for my children. Once I said "because I'm the Mom and you're the kid" it was simply easier for them to accept it.

I eventually convinced myself they looked for this answer as a reassuring platitude to help them define their miniscule yet important roles in the universe.

Followed by a scary look it was convincing enough.

My parents gave me the complete collection of Tell Me Why books. Whenever I'd ask about something not covered by those wonders of reference material, my parents would tell my brothers to explain it to me, which, as it turned out, was code for "beat him away from me."

Good times, good times.
